Shadow X5 Finds by Matt Zulz of Illinois
Matt Zulz, member of Team Shadow Midwest, had the opportunity to travel to Florida's treasure coast after the recent hurricanes, and returned with treasure most of us only dream about! Matt flew down from Illinois right before Hurricane Jeanne made landfall and just before his hotel roof blew off! He arrived on a Friday to find the island barricaded by Police, and was only able to hunt a day and a half before having to return home. The beach was cut about 5 feet down and the storm took out 50 to 60 yards in places. In Florida, Mel Fisher's company holds the water rights, but the beach between low and high tide is fair game for treasure hunters. In the short period he had to hunt, Matt found over twenty-five 1/2, 1 and 2 reales - most from the 1715 Spanish Fleet - with the exception of a 1618 2 reales and a 1690 2 reales from the Lima Mint! Probably the most significant find, and Matt's favorite, is a religious medallion from the 1715 Fleet valued in the 4 figure range. Matt is in the process of having the inscriptions translated, but so far he knows it depicts the Apostle, St. Peter. While eyeballing the gravel and seashells, Matt spotted several pieces of rare blue and white Kanghi china carried by the 1715 Fleet. The broken china commands prices up to $500.00, as the pieces are used to make earrings, pendants and other jewelry, as well as trinket boxes. Some of Matt's other finds were dozens of musketballs and lead sheeting used to line the treasure chests. The sheeting still has the impression of the canvas bags used to hold the coins! Matt's only regret is that he wasn't there a week earlier when a Nor'easter following Hurricane Ivan exposed several gold escudos for other beachcombers. Nonetheless, Matt's finds are no less than spectacular, and all were found with the Shadow X5. So in answer to Dino's question down below, "Can this be true?," the answer is an emphatic "YES!" Congratulations Matt, and thanks for sharing your treasure with all of us on the Shadow forum! In order....
